Oahu - Day 5

I took Cheryl shopping yesterday at Ontario Mills Outlet Center. We left at 11am and got home at 10pm. What a long day! Cheryl got a pair of shoes, a shirt, and two bras. I got Jim a wallet. That's all. When I gto home, the computer keyboard wouldn't work. I was too tired to deal with it last night. So here is yesterday's hawaii post (a little late).

Oahu, Day 5 - July 8

Our last full day on Oahu and being the tourists that we are, we just had to surf Waikiki!

We spent the afternoon doing the last item on David's "must-do on Oahu" list... Shopping at Ala Moana! Ala Moana is a HUGE 3-story mall. They have a food court that was so large, we just stood there saying, "WOW! Where do we want to eat? Where do we start?" LOL!


We spent the evening walking through Waikiki and International Marketplace one last time. I don't think I mentioned all the street performers. There were statue people (one gold, two silver, and one dressed in newspaper), artists, musicians, Elmo, and the basketball guy. I didn't take photos of the street performers. They don't like it unless you pay them first.


Now it's time to go to bed, pack, and get ready to head on to Kauai... and relax!

Oahu - Day 4

First some news. Cheryl didn't get her job, at least not yet. They want to wait until her schedule settles down. I was wondering how she was going to practice with the college team, work at a soccer camp, register for college, AND hold study job. They asked her to call back after school starts.

Oahu, Day 4 - July 7
Today we hit #1 on David's list... The Arizona Memorial. The concierge at the hotel told us that it gets very crowded, so go early. We arrived in Pearl Harbor at 7:15am (15 minutes before it opened), and were around 700th in line! That put us in Group 5. We walked through the exhibits before our Group met at 8:45. First they showed us a video. The video was very well done! "Enjoyed" is not the right word to use, but it was a great video. Then we boarded a boat that took us to the memorial.

Visiting the memorial took all morning. After lunch, we arranged to rent a couple of jetskis. We left from the marina near Ala Moana Beach Park, took a van to the boat launch, then took a boat to the place to pickup the jetskis. The jetskis launch from a floating platform near Sand Island.


We took two jetskis one for Jim and me, and one for Cheryl and Chris. Jim drove ours the entire time. Cheryl and Chris took turns driving.

Hellboy

I went for my long run yesterday... 19 miles! Well, actually I ran 14 miles, ran/walked 2 miles, and walked 3 miles. That was the longest day in my half-marathon training plan.
Jim went to the doctor for his hand. They re-x-rayed it and verified that there were no broken bones, but it's still bothering him. He has another doctor appointment on Monday.
The kids went to see HellBoy 2. They said it was funny and give it two-thumbs up! I've never seen the first movie, but from the poster, it doesn't look funny to me...

I have a dentist appointment in a few minutes. I'll post the Hawaii pictures when I get back.

Oahu - Day 3

Let's start with some soccer first. I got Jim tickets to the USA Women's vs Brazil game for Father's Day. That game was last night in San Diego. USA won 1-0, but the star forward, Abby Wambach, broke her leg. This was the last game before the team left for the Olympics in China. Now they need to go without Abby Wambach :o(

Oahu, Day 3 - July 6
It's a day of hiking. We planned on starting with #6 on David's list: Nu’uanu Pali Lookout. On the way to the lookout, we stopped at the MaunaWili Trail. It looked really pretty, so we took it a little ways (not the entire 9.3 miles!).

Next stop is Nu’uanu Pali Lookout! This spot overlooks the East side of the island (which is very green and beautiful). It is known for being very very windy, but wasn't too bad when we were there.


After a conversation about the Beatles in the car, an empty stretch of road led to an Abby Road photo op. LOL! It's not quite like England...


Our next stop was Punch Bowl Cemetery. Can you see the heart shaped shadow from the trees? There are two hearts, one on each side of the monument.


Our next destination was #5 on David's list... Tantlus Lookout. This is a quote from David's email: "Visiting this lookout shouldn't take too long unless you get lost, but if you get the right directions, its not hard to find the place, plus the drive up the mountain is beautiful." Guess what? We got lost. As we were driving around the Tantlus loop (in a clock-wise direction), we saw some cars parked along the North side of the road. We stopped, saw the hiking trail, and assumed it was the trail to Tantlus Lookout. We were wrong. The Pu'u Ohi'a trail does not lead to the Tantlus Lookout... But it was a very pretty hike:

Getting back in the car and driving completely around the Tantlus Loop, we found the overlook just before hitting the main road... BEAUTIFUL view of Honolulu:

Other than a well deserved dip in the ocean, that's it for Day 3!

Oahu - Day 2

I'm feeling much better today. It was just a 24 hr thing like my daughter and my brother caught on Kauai. My nephew goes to school at the University of Hawaii, and he put together a list of seven things that he recommends to do while on Oahu. Isn't he great?!! Here we are Day 2 on Oahu, we took a drive around the island and hit 2 of David's seven recommendations.

Oahu, Day 2 - July 5
Thanks to jet lag, we were up and ready to go by 6am. We started driving around the island. Our first stop was Hanauma Bay (#3 on David's list of things to do). He calls this the biggest tourist spot on Oahu, and it was beautiful!

We had to pay to get in, then watch a mandatory video about preserving the reef, before we could snorkel here. This is supposed to be the best snorkeling area on the island.

After Hanauma Bay, we continued around the island, stopping whenever we saw a nice beach or a possibly good snorkeling spot. We skipped the Polynesian Cultural Center. We figured that if it was any good, David would have put it on his list of things to do. I wanted to stop for shrimp at one of the spots along the North-East side of the island, but the timing wasn't quite right for lunch.

North shore, Pupukea Beach Park (in Sunset Beach) looked like a good place to snorkel, but still no fish here...

Well, being the tourists that we are, we also stopped at the State park to see Waimea Falls (which was was completely dry because of the drought), and the Dole Pineapple Plantation (where we dutifully bought some pineapple):

#2 on David's list was the North Shore and Matsumoto’s shave ice. We were just leaving the North Shore and figured that we must have missed Matsumoto's so we stopped at a little shaved ice place in a surf shop. After we finished our shaved ice, and drove about 100 feet, there was Matsumoto's with a line out the door and along the entire front of the building. Anyway, we missed Matsumoto's, but I'm not sure we would have stood in that line anyway.

We got back late, but in time for a swim and a quick dinner before bed. It was a beautiful drive. With a lot of "overlooks over-seas" (hahaha! That's for Cheryl) That's it for day 2... stay tuned for day 3.

Wall-e

Let's start with a review of Wall-e. Isn't he cute? He looks like Johnny-five from Short Circuit.

My hubby and kids went to see Wall-e last night. My husband and Chris loved it; my daughter didn't like it at all...

So, there you go... Wall-e is a boy's movie. According to Cheryl, I didn't miss anything.
I'll wait and watch it when it comes out on DVD.

We're home from Hawaii!!!

We got home late last night.
Today was spent doing laundry, the yard work, and going to the market. That's before I got hit by the yuckies. My hubby and the kids are at the theater seeing Wall-e, and I'm at home throwing up. YUCK! At least it waited until I got home.

For those on Kauai, Jim's hand is feeling better. For those not on Kauai, I'll go into the details on that later. I have over 800 photos of our trip, and almost 2 hours of video. The easiest way for me to share is to go through it day by day. Since I had comments about there not being any photos of me during our last vacation, I made an effort to hand off the camera during this vacation :o)

So pretend it's 4:30am on the 4th of July, and we are on our way to Oahu, LOL!


We arrived at Waikiki at 1pm... unfortunately our room wasn't going to be ready until 3pm. We tried walking out by the beach, but there was a big 4th of July canoe regatta going on right outside our hotel (we were staying at the Outrigger Waikiki Beach). There were so may people there, it was hard to find a place to walk.


But, the weather was beautiful and it was great just being on the beach. The International Marketplace was right across the street from the hotel. They have lots and lots of little booths there that sell trinkets. They also have a great food court with live music entertainment. We had dinner there several nights while we were in Oahu.


That night they shot off fireworks from Magic Island. We watched the fireworks, sitting on the sand in a warm drizzle... the perfect night!


Are we looking a little tired? With the three hour time difference, it's past midnight at home, hehehe!

Happy 4th of July!

We get up bright and early tomorrow (4:30am) to leave for Hawaii. We should be there in plenty of time to see the fireworks over Pearl Harbor.
